# Configure And Connect A Printer

> Add a printer device in Plato, configure the network connection, and attach it to POS.

Use this setup after the printer already has an IP address. If the printer is new, reset, or on the wrong network, start with [PC Network Setup](/printers/setup/pc-network-config).

## Before You Start

Prepare:

1. Printer brand and model.
2. Printer location, such as cashier, kitchen, bar, drinks, or prep.
3. Printer job, such as receipts, kitchen tickets, void tickets, reports, or cash drawer.
4. Connection type: Ethernet/LAN or Wi-Fi.
5. Printer IP address.
6. Printer port, usually `9100`.
7. Paper size, usually `80mm` or `58mm`.
8. Categories and order types that should print there.

If you do not know the IP address, print a self-test or network status page from the printer. See [Self-Test And Reset](/printers/setup/self-test-and-reset) or the model page for exact button steps.

## Add The Printer In Plato

1. Open `Restaurant` > `Settings` > `Device Management`.
2. Click `Add Device`.
3. Choose `Printer`.
4. Name the printer based on its physical job, such as `Main Receipt`, `Kitchen Hot`, or `Bar Printer`.
5. Save the device.

## Configure The Connection

1. Open the printer device.
2. Go to `Connection Config`.
3. Choose `Network`.
4. Enter the printer IP address.
5. Enter the printer port.
6. Save the printer.

Ethernet and Wi-Fi printers are both configured as `Network` printers because Plato sends print jobs to the printer IP address.

If Plato cannot reach the printer, confirm the POS device and printer are on the same local network and that the printer IP address did not change.

## Configure Outputs

Open `Template` and choose what this printer should print.

Common setups:

| Printer role    | Enable                                            |
| --------------- | ------------------------------------------------- |
| Receipt printer | Receipts, reports, cash drawer, cut paper         |
| Kitchen printer | Order tickets and the relevant kitchen categories |
| Bar printer     | Order tickets and drink categories                |
| Void printer    | Void tickets                                      |

Also review paper size, receipt logo, logo size, header, footer, QR code, bottom spacing, beep, cash drawer, and cut paper settings.

## Connect The Printer To POS

1. Open the POS device that should use this printer.
2. Go to `Config`.
3. Open `Connected Devices`.
4. Add the printer.
5. Save the POS device.

Connect only the printers that this POS should use. A cashier POS may connect to receipt, kitchen, and bar printers. A dedicated kitchen station may only need the kitchen printer.

## Test Before Service

After saving:

1. Print a test receipt.
2. Create a small test order.
3. Check that kitchen and bar tickets route to the right printer.
4. Reprint a receipt if needed.
5. Print a report if this printer handles reports.
6. Test the cash drawer if connected.

Fix routing before service starts, especially category and order type routing for kitchen and bar printers.
